Is WordPress free or not? That's what newcomers to the world of websites are wondering. WordPress has created a lot of confusion when it comes to using this well-known software.

There are two versions of WordPress:

  1. WordPress.com is a service that lets you create a WordPress website for a fee. The technical part is done by WordPress employees, and you, as the operator, only take care of the content creation.
  2. WordPress.org—here you can download the latest version of WordPress. The software is completely free, but for the technical base (web hosting and a domain), you have to spend money.

If you want to take care of the tech behind the site yourself, download the latest version of WordPress at WordPress.org and install it on a web host that you rent monthly. For web hosting, I can recommend Bluehost – It's good, reliable and cheap.

If you want to skip the technical part, create the site at WordPress.com and leave the technical support to people who know what they're doing.

In the long run, you should choose the first option and run WordPress on your own web hosting. In this case, you have full control over the technology and the entire site, plus all the data is yours.

If you use the WordPress.com service, the website will be hosted in a data center somewhere in the USA. You will never know where your data is and you won't have full control over your data – that's risky!
