There's no denying Minecraft's meteoric rise to fame. Since its 2009 debut, more than 100 million copies of the game have been sold throughout the world. More than 200 million people are now regularly investing time into Minecraft.

For those unfamiliar, Minecraft is a sandbox video game in which players use cubes as building blocks to create various constructions. Players can even make their own blocks using a block editor.

There are other games that offer similar features, such as Terraria or Dwarf Fortress. But they lack the community aspect that makes Minecraft so unique. The only alternative that has adopted not only the beautiful pixels of Minecraft, but also the gameplay, is Minetest:

Minetest is a free game that is available for all major platforms. As soon as you start the game for the first time, you get the usual Minecraft feeling: pixelated environment, a huge world, blocks that you can destroy to build something out of, but...

Minetest is still an unfinished game. There is no music, which in Minecraft provided an incomparably unique, cozy and relaxed atmosphere, and there are no enemies that attack you and for which you get experience points after a victory. Besides, there is no campaign - Minetest is all about mining and building.

If you love Minecraft and for some reason are looking for an alternative to this gaming legend, you'll surely find Minetest a comforting alternative with a familiar gameplay.
