When malware is installed on a computer or laptop, it can steal information, encrypt it so that it is no longer accessible, or delete it altogether. That's why it's important to use antivirus software and keep it up-to-date to protect your data and devices.

Even though Windows computers have built-in antivirus protection, additional antivirus software is advisable. Third-party antivirus software is recommended for comprehensive security that includes endpoint protection and protection against malware and potentially unwanted apps.

If you are a careful or experienced PC user who knows how to avoid most of the traps that criminals and hackers set up in programs and on the Internet, the protection built into Windows is usually enough.

But if you don't know anything about Internet security and download and run any file without thinking, you should install an extra antivirus program to protect your data and devices.

However, you should still follow the following two basic rules:

  1. Never download software from unknown sites on the Internet.
  2. Before you install or run any software or app, you should briefly scan it for malicious code using VirusTotal.

In many cases, the malicious code is installed by the user himself because files are downloaded to the PC and opened or executed. You should never download or run files if you do not trust the provider!
